The convertible top won t go down.
The usual failures are a broken wire in the microswitch loom which bends with the roof or the arm on the microswitch getting bent and not operating the switch properly.
One day you press the top switch in the center console and nothing happens.
How i simply solved the problem of the automatic convertible roof hood not coming down.

You have to push the roof slightly open to activate the electrics and that opens this switch.
Turn the key forward to the spot just before cranking emergency break on windows down slightly or all the way no difference foot on break roof unlatched and pushed back slightly.
To get the roof working first get the motor running you can do this with the engine off and boot lid open so that you can hear it.
The otg display has probably got a flexible printed circuit that is glued onto the main board these decay with age and contact is lost don t think contact cleaner will fix this.
This appears a common fault on bmw s of this age circa year 1999 mod.
If you are lucky you may be able to open convertible top by pressing the switch several times.
If it is too long it may just snap off the lever of the new microswitch again making the circuit all the time meaning the roof will work in all positions if the button and pedal are pressed.
This will apply to the z3 and 3 series convertible soft tops and can apply.
